Sprocket Power’s managed microgrid project at Vail Buick GMC in Bedford Hills is a ConEdison PowerReady Program case study. The managed microgrid will reduce Vail’s projected annual energy use by 50% and projected annual energy costs by 80% in the 5th year of operation. It will also reduce Vail’s carbon footprint by 187 tons of CO2 per year.
The case study, titled “Success Story: Managed Microgrid”, is being highlighted in ConEd’s marketing materials, both on their website and other promotional venues, as an innovative and smart approach that supports the Con Ed grid, providing benefits to Vail GMC and NY ratepayers in the process.
ConEd upgraded Vail’s existing 208V service line to 480V to adequately power the newly installed EV chargers, while Sprocket Power took advantage of PowerReady’s future-proofing incentives to increase conduit and panel sizes to allow easy installation of additional charging stations.

The managed microgrid installed by Sprocket Power includes a 7,000 sq. ft. rooftop solar PV array, a 100 kW capacity battery storage system with 2 hr duration, two Level 2 and one Level 3 (DCFC) charging stations, as well as EV charging management and total facility load management software.
Vail took advantage of ConEd, Federal, and NYS incentives, grants, and other financial benefits to install an innovative solution that efficiently scaled up their EV charging infrastructure while significantly reducing their costs. In return, Vail has a total facility management system that incorporates software, data, and machine learning to save money and manage their facility.
ConEd’s case study marketing materials also tout the unique approach adopted by Sprocket Power and Bedford 2030, a local sustainability group, to prominently place the battery storage unit – adorned with “climate” artwork created by students in SUNY Purchase’s Community Design Program – near the entrance to the dealership. Conspicuously placing the battery where every visitor will see highlights Vail’s community leadership and reminds everyone that thoughtful use of available technology can reduce greenhouse gas emissions and make the community healthier for everyone.
