EVinfo.net recently covered the managed microgrid we built at Hampton Jitney’s Calverton facility.
It makes Hampton Jitney one of the first commercial transit operators in New York to use a behind-the-meter microgrid to support fleet electrification.
For regional fleet operators, electrification is as much a utility decision as a vehicle decision. New charging loads can increase demand charges, and summer peaks put pressure on both operating costs and charger availability.
Mid-size fleets have often been left without a good answer. These projects are too complex to do in-house and too specialized for a typical contractor.
That’s the gap our managed microgrids are built to close.
We manage solar, battery storage, and optimization software around Hampton Jitney’s transit schedule. The battery stores midday solar and dispatches it during high-demand periods. That reduces demand-charge exposure and keeps charging available through summer peaks and grid strain. The same system earns additional value through grid-services programs, including energy export and demand response.
We stay with the project after go-live to operate and optimize it.
The feature highlights:
- Built to scale. The site is engineered for a Phase 2 expansion adding 1 MW of dedicated DC fast charging. That would position Calverton as a commercial charging hub for other regional electric fleets across Long Island.
- Measurable climate impact. The microgrid is projected to eliminate about 590 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions a year. It does this by displacing diesel and reducing reliance on gas peaker plants during peak demand, which supports New York’s Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (CLCPA) goals. As Sprocket Power CEO Maria Fields told EVinfo.net, the project shows that “fleet electrification can enhance operating margins while supporting grid stability.”
